TITLE: The Desert NAME: Andrew Wittrock COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: landover@iastate.edu WEBPAGE: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~landover/ TOPIC: Wilderness COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: awdesert.jpg ZIPFILE: awdesert.zip RENDERER USED: MegaPOV 3.1 TOOLS USED: Terrain Maker 1.0 RENDER TIME: ~60 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium-350 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A majestic mountain rising out of a serene desert wilderness DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Nothing fancy here. The landscape is a basic heightfield made in Terrain Maker. The ground texture is a leopard pattern for the sand, a slope map for the snow and mountain texture, and a gradient to vary the texture with height. The atmosphere consists of a plane for the clouds and a simple fog for distance fading. The cacti are constructed of cylinders and spheres with branch positions randomly perturbed and textured with a radial normal pattern. The sagebrushes are nested spheres made semi-transparent with the crackle pattern. All vegetation was placed randomly on the ground using MegaPOV's trace() function on the heightfield. Note: I experimented with the textures after producing the submitted image, and could not recall exactly what the changes were, so the submitted code will not exactly reproduce the submitted image, but it's pretty darn close.
