The texture on the wall looks too flat. Perhaps some bump-mapping would have

What can I say? For a first entry you did quite a good job. But as you stated
it yourself, being off-topic is a bit too clear. Some miscellaneous points:
the pencil is quite shiny and brand new, the book has a bit odd posture and the

windowsill is too bare. Keep it up!

This is a nice scene... it's a shame the wilderness topic 
wasn't emphasized more.  The book in particular looks 
good, as does the woodgrain on the desktop.  The view 
outside the window looks good.  You might want to 
consider taking down the shine on the book and the 
pencil, though, and adding some ridges to the metal 
band on the pencil would help its realism.  Good job 
overall, though.

I think this is a good concept, showing the image of wilderness in our
modern lives. The scene is a bit bare though. I would have liked to see
the book and its scene a little closer, so we can see what sort of
landscape you can do, but also to fill out what looks like a good deal of
unused space. The table and wall are quite bare - even other items like
more books, pens, glasses, would be good.
