TITLE: The New May Fail, The Ancient Shall Prevail NAME: Josh Carpenter COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: josh@joshcarpenter.com WEBPAGE: digitalvista.terrashare.com TOPIC: Contrast COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: oldnew.jpg RENDERER USED: Bryce 4.0 TOOLS USED: n/a RENDER TIME: 15 minutes HARDWARE USED: PIII 850 Mhz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This represents several levels of contrast. There is the contrast between modern technology (the spaceship) and ancient technology (the Easter Island statue). On a deeper level it represents the contrast between the fleeting and the everlasting. The ship has crashed in the sands, which are always shifting and changing. The statue is made of the same stuff as the mountain, which is unchangeable and ultimately durable. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The models are free, courtesy of www.3dup.net. The material on the ship body was custom built from the ground up to get the reflectivity and color I was loking for to be in contrast with the rugged mountains but still harmonize with the overall colorscheme of the image. The material on the mountains is (ironically) the "wet rock" preset with a few little tweaks. The sand is made from two "rounded dunes" terrain gray maps intersecting with a pretty heavily tweaked version of the beach sand preset, but with anti-aliasing on that object turned off to preserve the slight grain. A light, complementary beige haze setting was used to visually push the mountains "up" and "back" a little bit for a subtler sense of scale since this is an aerial view. Very slight brightness and contrast on the post render, plus the website attribution.
