In March of 1836, the vastly superior army of Mexican General Santa Anna laid siege for 13 days to the military outpost of the Alamo, containing 189 Texians, trying to quell the revolution of independence. The evening after he had killed the defenders and executed the survivors, Santa Anna ordered the townspeople to dispose of the bodies. They stacked the bodies in alternating rows with firewood, set fire to it, and saw it burn for two days. In this view, you are looking east at sunset, and a fire in the courtyard that's burning debris from the battle illuminates the Alamo. The cremations were several hundred yards south, and according to some accounts, Davy Crockett was killed at the left of your screen.
