TITLE: Insect Anger NAME: Justin Higgins COUNTRY: Australia EMAIL: jhiggins@mooseworld.net WEBPAGE: N/A TOPIC: Insects COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: bees_jh.jpg RENDERER USED: Blender 2.12 TOOLS USED: GIMP (for textures and final resize + signature) RENDER TIME: approx. 1 hour. HARDWARE USED: 733mhz piii 256mb RAM (Debian Linux 2.4.5) IMAGE DESCRIPTION: When I was a kid there there was this bee hive down the bottom of our garden... Ok, so there wasn't, but if there was, I would've shot it with my slingshot...if I'd had one, which I didn't...but you get the idea. That's the basic scenario for this image. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: For my last entry into IRTC I used blender to do the modelling and megapov for the actual render with textures because I couldn't get the kind of lighting and textures I wanted with blender. For this scene I've used blender for everything, I'm still not happy with using a scanline renderer for everything, but it really makes tweaking things much easier and I think any advantage I would have gained with povray are out weighed by the ease of use of blender. The tree, flowers, grass and bush type things are all stolen from 3dcafe.com, I've used the GIMP to make a texture for the tree bark from some photos of tree bark I had. Everything else in the image I modelled with either Nurbs or Meshes, I use 8 low level area lights for ambient light and one bright spot light to simulate the sun. The bees are a particle field of meshes with painted textures, they are animated in the actual scene and that's what I use to do the motion blur (blender does this for me, no post processing here, move along). I am most happy with the grass for this image, it's worth having squillions of mesh objects in the image just to get the effect it produces, it will also look good when I get around to animating this image. I am not happy with the way a lot of the textures look and as such I've tried to hide behind motion blur and fog as per usual. I have not included my .blend file for this scene as it is around 17mb zipped, but anyone who wants a copy for whatever reason is quite welcome to email me and I will arrange for you to have a copy.
