TITLE: Yakkin' NAME: Brendan Lemke COUNTRY: Canada EMAIL: brendanlemke@canada.com TOPIC: Winter COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: yakkin.jpg ZIPFILE: yakkin.zip RENDERER USED: MegaPov 0.7 TOOLS USED: Spatch, Crossroads, UVMapper, Pose2POV, MSImageComposer RENDER TIME: HARDWARE USED: Pentium-133MHz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This scene was meant to capture the feel of the ocean in winter - a typical Arctic afternoon. The image started as an idea from a travel magazine hoping to generate winter business for clients. I really like the beauty of blue water and sky with all the bright white of snow and ice. I thought I would try something that integrated these elements and also introduced a new element for me in ray tracing - the human form. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The kayaks, gear, and pilot were all modelled in Spatch and converted to mesh2 for MegaPov. All the textures were painted in MSIC. I also used MSIC to manufacture height fields for the ice bergs and floating ice chunks. The killer whales are just partially transparent image maps. A considerable amount of time was spent adjusting texture gradients and light sources to get just the right effect. I'm not perfectly happy with the result but I'm not sure how to get it exactly the way I want. The source is included in a zip file if you care to look and give some pointers. I was particularly pleased with the way the water turned out.
