They're very emotional places and can be use to conjure up all sorts of feelings, from love, to hope, to hate, to loneliness. Alone inside a cathedral, you feel so small... DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: When i was on vacation two years ago in England, I was fascinated by the cathedrals I saw, and I drew careful studies of how all the parts fit together, planning to make a cathedral in Rhino 3d. It didn't work. :) However, when I saw the topic on the irtc, I was inspired to try again using Realsoft3d. The entire cathedral is made from only two groups. An inner and outer column group. Each group is carefully constructed so that it will rotate and fit together with instances of itself to produce a repeating pattern. With a few dozen instances, a cathedral is instantly created and easily edited because changing one column changes all of them. The textures were all photographed from Exeter cathedral in England with my digital camera. Most of the work was put into lighting and texturing, an unusual but welcomed change for me. There are about 6 lights in the image, most of which are dedicated to making the person and fire visible. Everything is NURBS but the poser figure. NOTES All of the source files are included, since they're realtively small, but if you want to look at it textured, you'll have to redefine the texutre paths, since I set them up for network rendering.
