TITLE: War Room NAME: Matt Beighton COUNTRY: UK EMAIL: matt_beighton@hotmail.com TOPIC: Mystery COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: mbcluedo.jpg RENDERER USED: Maya 4.5 TOOLS USED: Maya 4.5, Poser 4, Photoshop 7 RENDER TIME: about 10 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium 4 1.5GHz / 640mb RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The image shows just how board games can get a little out of hand. If the image is too dark please turn up the brightness as there are some nice details. I've had a view "testers" complain it's too dark, but it looks fine on my monitor so it's hard to adjust it correctly. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Board Game ----------- The cluedo texture was drawn entirely by hand except for the logo in the centre which was scanned and placed on the texture. This was then simply applied to a plane. The figures are basic poser 4 models imported and textured with their colors as determined by standard cluedo rules!! The dice are polygon cubes, smoothed and with spheres subtracted to make the dots. The cards are also entirely hand textured (using photoshop). The weapons were created from simple polygon shapes, except for the revolver which is a duplicate of the one held by the shadow, obtained from www.3dcafe.com. The grime effect on the board was achieved by attatching a 2D fractal efect to the specular color node of the blinn texture. The same effect but with a little tweaking was used to create the grime on the walls. Room Deco ---------- The light above the table is a smoothed polygon cube and the ashtray is a heavily manipulated sub-div cube, textured with a random fractal bump map. The couch is made entirely of sub-div's and is textured with a denim texture from (http://www,3dcafe.com). NB The television screen is a screen grab of the Channel 4 news reporter Shadow ------- The "action" shadows in the background are intended to further add to the "mystery" of the image because you can't see who is holding the gun. The shadow is created by placing a tiny man and arm "in the wings" in front of a heavily focused point light. I'm very pleased witht he way this effect worked out. Lighting --------- The entire room is lit by two point lights above the table with intensity set to 0.2 and an ambient glow light in front of the TV with intensity set to 0.1. The spotlight to create the shadow slightly illuminates the couch. I havn't included a zip files as it is 7mb and I'm on a measly 56K connection. If anyone has any questions or desperately needs the files please email.
