TITLE: Kitchen Atomicus NAME: Joanne Simpson COUNTRY: Australia EMAIL: corvus@onewhiteraven.com WEBPAGE: http://www.onewhiteraven.com TOPIC: Surrealism COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: surreali.jpg RENDERER USED: Bryce 5 TOOLS USED: Bryce, Illustrator, Wings3D, Poser, XFrog RENDER TIME: 59 minutes HARDWARE USED: Athlon 2GHz, nVidia GForce IMAGE DESCRIPTION: I have always loved the image of Dali Atomicus by Phillipe Halsman (see http://www.luhring-design.com/information/essays/dali-atomicus/philippe-halsman. html), and wanted to reflect the dynamism of the original photograph (hence its place of honour on the refrigerator). I was aiming for a realistic, photographic quality, and I used the medium format because it is what I use in the non-rendered world. I also included other recurring style elements of Dali's work - the soft, warm, oblique lighting, the misty background, and the "exploding leaves" he used in several paintings. In keeping with the style of the Belgian surrealists such as Magritte and Delvaux, I have taken familiar objects and settings and juxtaposed them in an incongruous way. The kitchen is an idealised version of my own kitchen and back garden - as I would like it to be, rather than as it is. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Cat - Poser 4 Saucepan, splash, refrigerator and stovetop - modelled in Wings3D. A volumetric texture was applied to the splash to get the leafy effect. Door frames, cabinets, window blind - height fields drawn in Illustrator and applied to Bryce lattices. Lighting - spotlight filtered through a cedar blind, plus various infill lighting. Atmosphere - a tweaked variant of the Bryce "turbulent overcast" default. Textures - all in Bryce, variants of Bryce defaults.
