Captain's log (dated February 29....) :

....Our ship has been lost at sea for several weeks now. We had to ration the
food and fresh water for a few days since. The morale of the crew is in its
lowest ebb. Happenstance, just a few days ago, two crew men were involved in an
argument. Hysteria has sipped into their minds, presumably and the end result
was a first gory murder on the ship. The tormentor was hanged the next day
after a swift trial. This had to be done, however much some hated it, just to
quell the fears in the crew so, too, as not to let them go astray. If the ship
does not see any land, sooner or later, the worst nightmare is MUTINY.

At least there was a glimmer of hope when two sightings of land were reported.
The first happened after we put the first body(of the victim) to rest into the
sea. Later, some of the crew sighted an undulating land mass at some distance
away. But as soon as our ship was steered to its direction about a few hours
later, it seemed to disappear. The second sighting was after we put the second
body(of the tormentor's) into the sea on the next day. The same thing happened
again, the crew saw some land mass, yet there was nothing as the ship
approached its direction.

Could it be a coincidence or just the sea that is playing with the minds?
Desperation and despair in a forlorn voyage of aimlessness could do havoc to
the mind....Yet there is hope, even with the sightings of the 'imaginary
lands'....

(Indeed the hope was never to be... for the next fateful day......)

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

CSG and blobs/torus were used for the ship and sea monster models respectively.
Blobs were also used for the tiny crew of the ship. A heightfield is placed
onto the y plane for the sea to give a bigger wave effect. A very large sphere
using media is used as a background together with a skysphere. The media(from
the very large sphere) gives a weak reddish effect to the dark skysphere.

Textures for the ship(except its sails) are woodmaps from the woods.inc with a
gradient pattern. The sea texture are just pattern(agate and bumps) color maps.
Most of the textures of the ship and the sea textures are diffused at 0.1 to
give a darker effect. Skysphere texture is a combination of two bozo colormaps.
Media is used for the cannons' flames.

The sails of the ship are agate colormaps with an ambient/specular finishes. The
textures for the sea monster comes in 3 sections. The first is the top part(the
short minuscule 'spikes' of the sea monster) using just a gradient
colormap(with a Clear pigment in the colormap). The second is the main body
which is just marble with normal(agate) colormaps. Finally the third part, the
underneath skin of the seamonster which uses an array of white and black
pigment in a gradient colormap.
