TITLE: The Drunking Bird NAME: Maarten Dinger COUNTRY: New Zealand EMAIL: irtc@maartendinger.net WEBPAGE: none (yet) TOPIC: Toys & Games COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: drunking.jpg ZIPFILE: drunking.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.6 TOOLS USED: AC3D for modelling, Photoshop/scanner for the scanned textures. RENDER TIME: 1 Hr, 53 min HARDWARE USED: Pentium IV 2.4 GHz, 1 GB RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Inspired by one of my childhood toys "The Drinking Bird", I originally had a closeup of him on a simple table. However, I thought a story scene might be better so while staring at my wineglass, I decided to have the little guy driven to 'drinking' alcohol upon hearing Pink Floyd's "Momentary Lapse of Reason" album (specifically Track 2). DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: This is my first real effort at raytracing, so the techniques used are fairly simple. All the models and the basic scene setup were created in AC3D were exported to Povray for final rendering. Scanned textures are used on the phonebook, CD cover, wine bottle, carpet and painting. Textures on glass objects, cork, coffee table, and picture frame etc are derived from standard or slightly modified Povray includes supplied with the program, and/or basic normal pattern modifiers. The light source is an area light, with photons and radiosity enabled (although I have plenty of ambient ligting on most objects). Originally I had focal blur in mind for this scene (and it's still a flag in the source file), but opted out of it in the final render - a nice clean sharp image IMO looked better in this case. Obviously I wanted something to see out the window (e.g. stars), but the interior lighting made dim objects outside too dark to see, so the exterior detail was removed. No post-rendering touch-ups have been added. Due to the large sizes of the scanned images, I have only supplied the .pov source file in the zip.
