TITLE: icecup NAME: Julius Gauckler COUNTRY: Switzerland EMAIL: gjulius@student.ethz.ch TOPIC: Fire and Ice COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: icecup.jpg ZIPFILE: icecup.zip RENDERER USED: POV-Ray v3.6 TOOLS USED: Photoshop to adjust contrast brightness and to add my name RENDER TIME: ~4 days (I let it run on some weekends) HARDWARE USED: Pentium3 600Mhz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: It shows fire and Ice... First i thought of something "flamb_" or a Ice-cream with fireworks. When I came to the background I had the idea of Ice-cream on lava. The Final picture shows a Ice-cram (similar to "banana split") on a ice table in the middle of a lava cave. I tried to build up a contrast: the blue and the red light, bright and dark, clean ice and burned lava- I hope it worked. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Everything in Povray. First the Ice-cream: where i used a picture as inspiration. (http://www.utexas.edu/student/esl/social/04/icecream/banana_split.gif). Spheres, SOR with some textures. The chocolate and cream are blobs with some While-loop to place (randomly) the blob-spheres. The cave: its a isosurface using 3 pigment functions for the structure + spherical function . The ground: also a isosurface with pigment function + y. Gradient y texture, noshadow. The Ice. One part was a Isosurface and some primitives. most of it are boxes spread with random parameter. Light: sportlights with white + blue from the top. a bunch of red lights with fall-off near the cave wall. I am not happy with the light nor with the atmosphere. It took days to render, because of the isosurace and the many boxes out of ice with reflection transmission etc. And some light sources... I'd loved to add some atmospheric effect, fog, smoke, and steam around the ice and so on... but time :-( I got a screen with wired gamma i am niot good in adjusting colours and contrast. I tried to improve it in Photoshop, here it looks ok, i hope it's fine for your screen as well.
